Attitude and Values
Patience: It is not only a virtue, but it is a key and crucial element in leadership because nothing happens overnight
Endurance: As stated above, things do not happen overnight, and endurance is needed in order to keep going and not give up when the going gets tough
Compassion/Empathy: An extremely important aspect of leadership. One has to be able to have the ability to understand and share the feelings of another and to be caring of those in need.

For me all, three of these aspects have been crucial and essential elements that truly embody a leader. As someone who wants to go into mental health, patience is something that is going to be a critical part of that. Many people need some time to get comfortable before opening up and truly being able to be vulnerable, and you simply cannot rush this process. If you want to help people, it has to be on their own time and how they feel comfortable. There is also a difference between sympathy and empathy. I chose empathy because unlike sympathy where you simply feel sorry for someone, empathy requires more effort. You have to truly acknowledge someone else's feelings and be able to understand them and share them with the other person. It goes that one step further than sympathy. Endurance is needed to give you strength to get through all those rough times. It would be much easier to give up, but then you'd accomplish nothing. Instead when it gets hard you have to have that endurance that will not only get you through, but maybe it means that you take all the negativity and you turn it around and use it as a driving force to really be able to accomplish whatever may be necessary no matter what.

I try to enact these values in my daily life both professionally and personally. I try my best in school, even when I want to give up, I endure. When I am tired and want to give up, I endure. I am patient and try to empathize with absolutely all of those around me, family, friends, classmates, professors, and even strangers. Learn more about My Leadership in Action.
